JANUARY

 

2nd (Sat) In case there is no bus service in operation, we will meet at the Humfrey Rooms at 2.00pm and commence our walk from there!  Tea available.    SATURDAY WALKS

5th (Tue) Bring, Show & Tell Evening - members and guests have an opportunity to bring along an unusual or interesting specimen or piece of equipment for everyone to see and comment on.   MICROSCOPY

6th (Wed) Set Subject “A Quiet Moment” A themed competition of three projected images and / or prints.    8.00pm start.   PHOTOGRAPHY

7th (Thu) Plant Folklore by Stuart Phillips. Stuart covers such subjects as why we garnish food with parsley, and why we kiss under the mistletoe at Christmas; as well as the significance of the national emblems of the rose, thistle, shamrock and leek.   BOTANY

9th (Sat) Meet opposite Becket's Well at 1.30pm for a short walk before our AGM in the Humfrey Rooms at 2.30pm,*.   Tea afterwards.   SATURDAY WALKS

10th (Sun) Weather Workshop. We will discuss the weather events and trends of the last month, and look forward to next month’s weather.   2.30pm start.   METEOROLOGY

11th (Mon) The Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes by Neil Parker. Neil talks about Britain's telescopes on the Island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. What are they? How were they built and what is it like to work on them? An insider's view of some of the world's most productive optical telescopes.   ASTRONOMY

13th (Wed) Open House The rooms will be open for members and guests to look at the library books, magazines and exhibits. Tea, coffee, soup and light lunches available.           10.30am-2.30pm

13th (Wed) Practical Evening: Presenting Your Images by Paul Hayes and Vic Seaton. An image is greatly influenced by how it is presented. Paul will demonstrate how to prepare your digital images to be either displayed by a digital projector or printed. Vic will demonstrate the different methods and styles in which a print can be mounted for best effect.  8.00pm start.   PHOTOGRAPHY

14th (Thu) Coral A look at man’s disgraceful attitude to coral, from blowing it up for hardcore to removal for souvenirs because of its beauty.     2.30pm start    GENERAL

16th (Sat) A pleasant walk along Billing Brook and Lakes is today’s venue. Meet in the bus station for bus SC1 at 1.35pm,*. Tea at the Weston Favell Centre.   SATURDAY WALKS

18th (Mon) Curation Group A good opportunity to explore the society’s historic collections as we continue to curate (tidy up, clean, record etc.) them. We are starting with our Minerals Collection.   10.30am to 12.30pm

20th (Wed) Photoshop for Beginners Brian Pere will describe and demonstrate the use of Photoshop, and Photoshop Elements for beginners and experienced users, and how to get the results you want.  8.00pm start.   PHOTOGRAPHY

21st (Thu) The Downs by Richard Young. Richard will be describing the countryside south of London dominated by the chalk and other Cretaceous rocks.   GEOLOGY

23rd (Sat) A stroll around the village of Kingsthorpe will  be  today's  location. Meet  in  the  bus  station for bus FN 4A at 1.30pm,*.   Tea available.   SATURDAY WALKS

25th (Mon) Planetary Formation, by Dr Martin Andrews. Dr Andrews is uniquely qualified in this subject after obtaining his PhD in planetary formation.   ASTRONOMY

26th (Tue) Byzantium a presentation by John Romer, who is an eminent archaeologist. Byzantium has now become the modern, bustling city of Istanbul.   ARCHAEOLOGY & HISTORY

27th (Wed) Underwood Cup Pictorial image competition.  Three projected images, digital and/or slide.   Round 2 of 3     8.00pm start.   PHOTOGRAPHY

28th (Thu) The Ultimate Shark A presentation featuring this great predator of the sea. 2.30pm start   ZOOLOGY

30th (Sat) Market Harborough is the destination today for a walk or visit the Symington Museum. Meet in the bus station for bus SC X7 at 11.20am,*   SATURDAY WALKS
